Reviews and Ratings

Andrew Bernardo rated this wine as 95/100 with the following review:

There is a dried mushroom and forest floor edge presence throughout the wine. It's warm and generous with fresh and dried black fruit, warm spice, and dried herb. There is a hint of roasted nuts on the finish. 95 points. (www.ottawawinejournal.com)
Andrea Shapiro rated this wine as 95/100 with the following review:

Currently available in the October 2017 vintages release this one is a 10 year old Barolo Riserva. Beautiful medium garnet color. On the nose - strawberry, raspberry, leather, tobacco, graphite, mushroom and a funky chemical note out at the end. Flavours of tart bing cherry, dried cranberry, chutney and earthy mushroomy forest floor. Incredibly delicate and refined. High acidity and tannins with medium plus body and finish, echoing some dried fruit and leafy consummated components. Velvety and vivacious. A “reflection” wine, perfect to pair with a cigar, conversation and one’s thoughts. Food accompaniments include, dark bitter chocolate and fruit, or medium cheeses. 95 points. Tasted with Fontanafredda brand ambassador, Alberto Frea - October 2017
Louise Boutin -Certified Sommelier rated this wine as 95/100 with the following review:

Produced only in good vintages from low yield specific vineyards, this beauty has a darker garnet color than most Barolos. Expressive nose — dark cherry, dry roses, tobacco, licorice and dry figs. A long maturation process both in French barriques and casks and then in bottle leads to an elegant wine with fine-grain tannins and a long heart warming balanced balsamic flavour finish. Resist aerating/decanting as per winemaker’s recommandation and let this spectacular Barolo slowly reveal itself in the glass. Enjoy with aged cheeses, dry fruits and walnuts.

Sean O'Regan - Certified Sommelier rated this wine as 94/100 with the following review:

Deep garnet in the glass with an expressive nose showing beautiful earthy notes like sweet composted leaves, strawberry, cherry, dreid roses, balsamic notes, dried herb and fennel. Elegant palate, fine chalky tannins, cherry fruit, savory, great balance. Pair with steak Florentine and mushroom risotto.

Colin McKone - Sommelier rated this wine as 94/100 with the following review:

Ruby in colour with intense aromas of plum, baking spice, raspberry and black pepper with the red fruit and spice notes following through on the palate leading into a long peppery finish. This is a very well balanced wine with alcohol, tannins, acidity and flavours integrated together beautifully. This will pair well with pasta dishes, firm cheeses and grilled red meats, in addition to enjoying it on its own. Tasted on October 29, 2017.
Courtney Flood rated this wine as 93/100 with the following review:

Savoury and intense with dark chocolate, espresso, mint, rose, tea leaf and a slight note of cured meat. On sipping, there is more fruit with the concentrated taste of a fig jam, tangy balsamic, earthy beet, bitter cocoa powder, and herbal sage and mint.

Pairing: An intense wine to pair with food, I would drink this on it's own, with a cheese platter, or with dark chocolate so as not to compete with the complexity of the wine. I had the opportunity to taste it with a dark chocolate and beet mousse, which was also perfect.
Mary Anne van Gaal rated this wine as 93/100 with the following review:

This is Fontanafredda's signature Barolo wine and for good reason. It is at its best after aging at least ten years so this one is just starting into its prime. It was aged three years in oak and a further two years in the bottle before being released. Rich ruby tones hint at black cherry, dried mushrooms, peppercorns and mint. A very smooth finish. This was delicious paired with a chocolate beet mousse with a drizzle of salted caramel and candied pecan. Tasted October 29, 2017 at an Ottawa Fontanafredda wine tasting.
Gwen Barton rated this wine as 93/100 with the following review:

Rich, elegant and velvety smooth Barolo from Fontanafredda. Wonderful aromas and flavours of currant, mint, violets and forest floor. Finish coated with black fruit and sweet spice. Be sure to open at least an hour before drinking - this one needs to breathe a bit to allow the complexities to shine. Pair with rich, mature cheese. Tasted: Oct 2017. @fontanafredda_
Donna Hargrove rated this wine as 93/100 with the following review:

Just recently released to LCBO Vintages this 2007 Barolo is just now ready to enjoy, after aging 10 years in the bottle. And enjoy you will! A deep ruby colour, with blackberry and earthy notes of mushroom and tobacco on the nose, the palate is presented with a warm, smooth, sweetness with just the right amount of acidity. The quality of his wine is reflected in its price point. If you splurge you will not be disappointed.

Lynn Van Der Linde rated this wine as 92/100 with the following review:

A wonderful holiday gift for those Barolo lovers in your circle!
The 2007 vintage represents a perfect aging of 10 years in the bottle.
Rich garnet hue in the glass, with classic Barolo aromas of violets, vanilla, and white pepper, and a lingering spicy finish.
Tasted October 2017.
Rachelle O'Connor rated this wine as 92/100 with the following review:

Another outstanding wine from the internationally acclaimed producer Fontanafredda. Lots of dark fruit noted on the glorious palate with delicate traces of spice, smoke, licorice and mint - tightly wrapped in a blanket of vanilla, violet and roasted chestnuts. Drink now or over the next ten years. Tasted with @Fontanafredda_ Brand Ambassador Alberto Frea - October 2017.
Melanie Lloyd - Certified Sommelier rated this wine as 91/100 with the following review:

This 2007 Barolo has lots of underwood aromas that includes decomposing leaves and truffles. There are also dark berry aromas, sweet spice such as cinnamon, and a hint of pepper. On the palate there are dark berries, cocoa, and a touch of cinnamon at the finish. The tannins are structured and well integrated. The flavours linger on the palate.

This wine paired very well with a chocolate mousse. It would also pair nicely with flavourful cheeses or with a grilled steak in a mushroom sauce.

Tasted October 2017
Fontanafredda Riserva (2007) is a Barolo from the Piedmont made with 100% Nebbiolo. The wine is a ruby red with garnet rim in the glass with a nose of dried roses, leather, spice and espresso. This vintage was a strong one for Barolo. - Community Wine Reviews
