Reviews and Ratings

Jane Staples - Certified Sommelier rated this wine as 91/100 with the following review:

A dry red made from 60% Mavrodafine, 40% Kalavitrino varietals grown in the Peloponnese, Greece. Made from hand-selected grapes from historical vineyard where monks made wine for over 500 yrs. Now a limited quantity of premium wines are being made. Aromatic with dark berry fruit, followed by more ripe berries, milk chocolate, vanilla and oak palate. Tastes rather like a Cab Sauv without herbal aspect. Smooth and elegant.
Tasted Jan. 2017
Greece's Achaia Domain Mega Spileo (2010) is a blend of 60% Mavrodafine and 40% Mavro Kalavritino grapes. Grape vines are cordon-trained to allow for full maturation of wine grapes. Vines are planted at 780 to 880 metres above sea level in sandy, clay soils. The wine undergoes a long, slow fermentation in stainless steel tanks and is then aged 16 months with fine lees in French oak barrels and aged another 24 months at the winery before release. There were 6500 bottles produced of this vintage. - Community Wine Reviews
