Reviews and Ratings

Deborah Podurgiel WSET IV Candidate - Certified Sommelier rated this wine as 93/100 with the following review:

If you’re looking for a cozy, smooth winter red, Dark Horse Vineyard 2016 Meritage is perfect for those wintry nights by the hearth fire.

Produced from 65% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc. This Bordeaux-style red wine blend is the deepest red in the glass, but it is a dark wine with a bright and sensuous soul, inviting on the nose with warm aromas of black cherry, plum conserves, baking spices and Madagascar vanilla. On the palate, it is elegant but assertive, generous with layers of spiced plum, dark cherry, earthy violets, smoky vanilla, dried tobacco, cedar spice, silky and mouth-filling finishing long and sensuously satisfying – a well-balanced and beautifully crafted Meritage worth every penny.

The wine was aged 16 months in French and American oak barrels before being transferred back into stainless steel tanks prior to final blending. Paired with a wintry, snowy night by the fire, but this full-bodied Meritage would be amazing with roast pheasant or filet mignon. Tasted November 2020.

There are very few people in the wine world who "get it" and Natalie is one of those who brings more fun to a buttoned-up and stodgy game.
