Cossart Gordon is a full and rich 5-year-old Malmsey Madeira with grapes sourced from vineyards up to 650 feet above sea level. Skin contact with grapes was about 48 hours and the wine was fortified with a grape brandy arresting the Madeira at 110 g/l residual sugar. The ageing process of Madeira is an interesting and complex one with this Malmsey aged in American oak casks “canteiro” system. The warming of the wine and the temperature of the wine are controlled by the winemaker. This is called the “estufagem” method. Overtime, the barrels are moved from the warm lofts of the winery to the cooler ground floors. Look for rich, nutty, dried apricot and stone fruit flavours on this gently sweet Madeira. Drinking beautifully now through 2025.

Malmsey Madeira food pairings: roasted nuts, cheeses, tiramisu, fruit cake, rich chocolate desserts, pungent cheeses, custard pastries.

Reviews and Ratings

Jay Denney rated this wine as 91/100 with the following review:

Sad I only bought a single bottle of this tasty Malmsey. Unctuous, but with enough residual acid that it isn't cloying. Raisins, figs, dates, roasted almonds and mocha.
Cossart Gordon is a rich and full five-year-old Malmsey Madeira produced from the Malvasia wine grape and intensely sweet on the palate (the sweetest of the Madeira) with nutty, treacle , coffee and citrus zest flavours. Chill slightly and have it on its own as dessert, or pour with blue cheeses, dried fruit, nuts and rich dark chocolate desserts. - Community Wine Reviews
