Reviews and Ratings

Deborah Podurgiel WSET IV Candidate - Certified Sommelier rated this wine as 92/100 with the following review:

Maréchal Foch is not an easy grape to work with, but Celista Estate Winery has mastered the art of bringing out the best in that grape with their Oak Barrel Reserve Foch 2021. Deep, dark red in the glass, the wine is fragrant with dark berry, plum and spicy notes. On the palate, the wine is dry, medium-plus-bodied, fruity and fresh with spiced black cherry, dark chocolate, savoury herbs, vanilla and earthy flavours with well-integrated oak spice and balanced with medium-plus acidity fresh, juicy with excellent length on the palate. Tannins are structured and velvety. A great food wine, lightly chill it to max its fruity flavours and pour it with rich meaty dishes like roast turkey, sausage cassoulet, games dishes and, as the winery suggests, with roast duck dinner, which is what we did. Tasted October 2024.

The Maréchal Foch grape is a disease-resistant, cold hardy, hybrid, blue-black grape variety. Classified as a teinturier grape, both the skin and the flesh of the grape is deep red in colour giving deeply coloured wines. Maréchal Foch is also perfectly suited for the hot days and cool nights of the Shuswap.

"Maréchal Foch was bred in France in the 1910’s by Eugene Kuhlmann, who crossed a Goldriesling and a native American Vitis riparia-rupestris to create “Kuhlmann 188-2” It was named after Maréchal Ferdinand Foch, a prominent French General of the First World War who handled the Armistice negotiations to end the war."

The Financial Times of London

There are very few people in the wine world who "get it" and Natalie is one of those who brings more fun to a buttoned-up and stodgy game.
