The 2021 Caymus-Suisun Grand Durif is a powerhouse of a wine, showcasing the bold character and depth that Durif (also known as Petite Sirah) can achieve. In the glass, it presents a deep, inky purple colour that hints at its intensity. The nose is a complex bouquet of blackberry jam, black cherry, and blueberry, accented by notes of black pepper, violets, and a touch of smoky oak. The tannins are robust yet polished, providing a firm structure that supports the wine’s weight. The finish is long and satisfying, leaving lingering impressions of black fruit and spice. Pair this wine with a hearty braised beef short rib, where the rich meat and its savoury jus complement the wine’s bold fruit and tannic structure. Another excellent match is a roasted beet and goat cheese salad; the earthy beets and tangy cheese play beautifully against the wine's dark fruit and spice. For a sweet ending, try a dark chocolate lava cake; the molten centre and intense chocolate flavours enhance the wine’s cocoa and espresso notes.

Durif food pairings: well-marbled ribeye steak, pork roast, roast leg of lamb.

Reviews and Ratings

Caymus-Suisun 2021 Grand Durif is a robust, muscular, full-bodied red; a deep inky purple in the glass and fragrant with blackberry jam, black cherry, blueberry, cracked black pepper, violets, dark chocolate and a hint of smoky, toasty oak spice on the nose and palate. Tannins are structured and polished and it finishes long and satisfying. Enjoy with a hearty meat dish like braised beef short ribs. The Durif grape (a.k.a. Petite Sirah) is a crossing of Syrah and Peloursin. - Community Wine Reviews
