Produced by the iconic Cantena family, San Carlos 2016 is a full-bodied, juicy and savoury Cabernet Franc produced from 20-year-old vines in El Cepillo, a cooler site in San Carlos. The wine was matured in French oak barriques for 12 months. Elegant with rich and ripe raspberry, blueberry flavours and well-integrated tannins. Delicious.

Cabernet Franc food pairings: roast turkey, stuffed breast of veal, pork tenderloin.

Reviews and Ratings

Greg Hughes rated this wine as 89/100 with the following review:

Catena has me hooked, when I see Cabernet Franc on one of their labels. It's not as hefty as Cab Sauv or Malbec and to make a good Cab Franc, it has to retain a nice array of spice and fruit but it also has to have elegant, well preserved aromatics. This achiebes that. This wine was sourced from a small area called El Cepillo, San Carlos (in the Uco Valley).
Beautiful garnet colour. Decently rich and opaque.
Aromas of incense, cherry, red apple, red currant, craisin, licorice, and cardamom.
Flavours of red berry and a ton of spiciness (dried herb and smoke).
It's very well made. The year in French oak is completely in kilter and hides none of the expressive varietal character.
Completely delicious. Steak au poivre would go well, here. It could last a short stint in the cellar, as well.
From Cantena, San Carlos 2016 is a full-bodied, juicy and savoury Cabernet Franc produced by the iconic Catena family who have always been the leading lights in Argentina's rise. Their Appellation series is modelled after the Burgundy system where village names become synonymous with the distinctive wines produced there. The 2016 vintage is produced from 20-year-old vines in El Cepillo, a cooler site in San Carlos and the wine was matured in French oak barriques for 12 months prior to bottling. Supple with rich and ripe raspberry, blueberry flavours, a kiss of white pepper and well-integrated tannins. Lots to love now and for the next five years. Pair with roast chicken. - Community Wine Reviews
