Athene 2015 is a lush and full-bodied red blend of 52% Syrah, 48% Cabernet Sauvignon produced by well-known Burrowing Owl Estate Winery. The Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon wine grapes were hand-harvested from Burrowing Owl’s Vineyard on Black Sage Bench. This vintage is rich, structured and smoke with incredible layers of blackberry, raspberry and blueberry fruit, savoury herbs, blue and violet florals and toasty oak flavours on the palate. Rich and opulent. Enjoy now and for the next five years.

Food pairings: grilled meats, meat lover's pizza, meaty stews.

Reviews and Ratings

Matt Steeves - Certified Sommelier rated this wine as 95/100 with the following review:

This beautiful Okanagan blend showcases the strength, elegance, and harmony of Burrowing Owl's premium wines. A blend of 58% Cabernet Sauvignon and 42% Syrah, from Burrowing Owl's estate vineyards on the Black Sage Bench, it's deep and concentrated with layers of dark fruits, sweet spices, and an elegant yet rich texture. The wine was aged for 18 months in a blend of 71% French, 23% American and 6% Hungarian oak, with only 17% new oak, then bottled unfiltered, and the result is pure Black Sage Bench expression of these two remarkable varietals that together are far greater than they'd be on their own. A testament to the winemaking genius of Burrowing Owl's team, that produced a truly remarkable wine from the outstanding 2015 vintage. Tasted November 2018. 95 points. Jane Staples - Certified Sommelier rated this wine as 94/100 with the following review:

A very sensuous and elegant Cab Sauv - Syrah blend from British Columbia's Okanagan Valley. Fragrant plum, raspberry, cherry and savoury aromas invite you to linger over a rich, layered palate that gives dark fruit, white pepper and anise. Mouthwatering acidity, satiny texture and a lingering finish with a touch of smoke. Fantastic gift wine, sure to please. Enjoy with game, turkey or rack of lamb.

Jennifer Havers - WSET Level 3 rated this wine as 93/100 with the following review:

Beautiful!! This is a lovely blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. Aromas of blueberry, blackberries, violet, black pepper, baking spice and some warm oak. Full bodied on the palate, with medium acidity and rich berry notes mingled with smoke and cedar on the plate
Rich, flavourful, with a lingering finish. Enjoy with herb encrusted leg of lamb.
Burrowing Owl's Athene 2015 is a lush and full-bodied red blend of 52% Syrah, 48% Cabernet Sauvignon with rich and textured blackberry, raspberry, blueberry, espresso, dried thyme and sage flavours on the palate. Tannins are firm but ripe. The Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon wine grapes were hand-harvested from Burrowing Owl’s Vineyard on Black Sage Bench. Wine grapes were co-fermented to better marry the flavours. The wine was aged for 18 months in oak barrels that were 90% French oak, 10% Hungarian, half new oak and one-year-old. Enjoy now with a venison filet mignon. - Community Wine Reviews
