Reviews and Ratings

Greg Hughes rated this wine as 93/100 with the following review:

The irreverent Bonny Doon produce a lot of interesting red dissimilar from their neighbours. They're best known for their Big House and Cardinal Zin brands, which have since been sold. Now they focus more on the premium spectrum with interesting Rhône style blends, like Cigare Volante and this straight Central Coast Syrah.
Deep opaque ruby with purple hues.
Aromas of blackberry leaf, mulberry, chickory, damsons, kirsch, and liquorice.
Nothing flabby about this red - it has plenty of structure. Flavours of blackberry, currant, plum, chocolate and vanilla. Tobacco, anise, and black pepper accompany those purple fruit on the finish.
The company likens this wine to the style of the Northern Rhone - Saint Joseph or Crozes-Hermitage. There is a cool climate vibe to the structure, but it is hard to hide that incredible swathe of Cali character.

Marco Giovanetti rated this wine as 93/100 with the following review:

Licorice, black fruits with violets and fur game aromas. On the mouth, medium to full body with a rich coating texture in palate. Balanced in a style of rhone meets california
Jacky Blisson rated this wine as 90/100 with the following review:

Inky dark ruby colour. Intensely perfumed, moderately complex aromas of leather, violets and ripe dark fruits. Full bodied, smooth and velvetty on the palate, with fine grained tannins and nice depth of fruit through the mid-palate. The oak is quite present (a mix of barrel ageing and oak chips), but is well integrated and harmonious. Ripe dark fruits and barnyard notes linger on the finish.
