Natalie's Score: 89/100

A full-bodied Rioja with great finesse, elegance and length. The 2010 vintage tastes like it's starting to fade so drink it now. Love the tertiary aromas of tanned leather, cigar and violets. Mouth-wateringly juicy for a wide range of dishes from lamb to roast beef. Highly recommended.

Tempranillo food pairings: roast leg of lamb, roast beef, venison steak and sauteed wild mushrooms.

Reviews and Ratings

Rachelle O'Connor rated this wine as 90/100 with the following review:

This Gran Reserva has been aged 24 months in American and French oak and a further 36 months in the bottle. This wine is ruby red in color with beautiful aromas of scented tobacco, whole cloves and cracked pepper. The tannins are integrated and smooth with a velvety finish.
Haowen rated this wine as 89/100
Heather Wall - CS; WSET Advanced rated this wine as 89/100 with the following review:

There's some definite maturity happening in this 90% Rioja Tempranillo with earthy, tobacco leaf, leather, fleshy plum, coffee and pepper. A rustic handsome wine - not a pretty wine. I love it when a wine tastes like I picture the landscape and this one does that for me. One day I'll make it to Rioja to verify my tasting note!! :) Pair with braised lamb.
Tasted: February 2017
Stephen Andrews reviewed this wine as follows:

Tasted Sept. 19, 2018. Colour a nice medium ruby. Legs medium. Aromas and flavours of, cherry, sweet spices, tobacco, cloves, black pepper, cigar box. Taste extra dry, full body, mature round soft polished tannins. Fruit minus, mouthwatering, medium alcohol. Long oak flavour after taste. I like this wine it I was elegant to drink and a pleasure to try. A great match for beef, or lamb. Worth th price.
Barón de Ley Gran Reserva (2010) is a full-bodied Rioja with finesse, elegance and great length. Lots of tertiary, earthy aromas of leather, cigar and dried figgy and red fruit. This Gran Reserva was made with Tempranillo grapes from the winery's estate vineyards, and the wine is only made in great vintages. This wine has been aged for 24 months in American and French casks and a further 36 months in the bottle. - Community Wine Reviews
