This robust Spanish red wine is a blend of 90% Tempranillo and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon grapes that was aged for 24 months in French oak barrels. It has a firm grip on the palate it offers more earthy, smoky, dusty aromas and flavours than fruit-forward ones. Complex, elegant and mature. Dry and subtle, with tanned leather and cigar box. This Spanish DO wine finishes with dry tobacco and cedar. Decant for 1 hour and pair with lamb and rosemary.

Food pairings: rack of lamb, rib eye steak, pork crown roast.

Reviews and Ratings

Christian Marcoux rated this wine as 91/100 with the following review:

A rich and deep wine from the Balbas Family Wines, located in the Ribera Del Duero, the Balbas Reserva is made from 90% Tempranillo and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine offers an amazing bouquet of fig, plum, parmesan cheese, black pepper, pastrami, cigar box and oak. This 2006 vintage aged 24 months in French oak barrels, resulting in a full body, well polished tannins, and a long and complex finish, showing great quality from this Spaniard. Flavors of dried blueberry, raisin, dried leaf, black pepper, clay dust, cocoa and oak. Enjoy!
Daniel O'Keefe rated this wine as 89/100 with the following review:

This 90-10 blend of Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon spent 24 months in French oak prior to bottling. Dried fruit leads into sweet smoke, leather, caramel, and oak spice. Moderate tannins with balanced body and acid. Ripe and pleasant, a good match for roast chicken and pork tenderloin.
Linda Mertes WSET 2 rated this wine as 88/100 with the following review:

A full-bodied Spanish blend of 90% Tempranillo and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, well-aged with a vintage of 2006 so drink now. Dark berry aromas and palate, there are still medium-high tannins. Serve with BBQ red meat, prepared in a dry rub.
Balbás Reserva 2006 is a full-bodied Spanish red wine from the Ribera Del Duero wine region made with mostly Tempranillo and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine blend matured two years in French oak barrel. Lots of blackberry and blueberry flavours on the palate, grippy with earthy, smoky and dusty herbs. Great structure, balance and vibrant acidity for food. Drink now and for the next five years. Pair with slow-braised venison ribs. - Community Wine Reviews
