Natalie's Score: 90/100

Juicy and full-bodied with rich aromas of fleshy black plums, blackberries and smoke. Relatively polished in texture on the palate. On the Douro River, river bends are called "voltas" and all have individual names. The Volta of Andreza is one of the most beautiful, and this wine is named for it. The two winemakers Joao Silva e Sousa and Francisco Baptisto work with vines planted at a high altitude, which gives more structure to the wine than those grapes grown closer to the river. This is a blend of traditional varieties: Touriga Nacional and Touriga Roriz. Half the wine was aged in French and American oak barrels. There is no filtration, clarification or stabilization of this wine. Pair with hearty meat dishes.

Food pairings: grilled flank steak, slow-braised ribs, roast chicken.

Reviews and Ratings

Jane Staples - Certified Sommelier rated this wine as 91/100 with the following review:

A blend of Franca Touriga, Franca Nacional and Tinta Roriz, from Portugal's spectacular Douro River valley, a World Heritage Site. Aromatic with concentrated dark berry and plum flavours and finely woven vanilla, sweet spice and sous bois. Consistent excellent value in Portuguese reds. Enjoy with hearty meat casseroles, stews and hard cheeses.

Melanie Lloyd - Certified Sommelier rated this wine as 89/100 with the following review:

Aromas of juicy raspberries, tart plums, with hints of beets, cedar, and violet.

Flavours of sour cherries, black pepper and espresso. It is full bodied with structured tannins and a nice long finish.

Tasted February 2018
Andreza Reserva 2014 is a great value under $20, red blend of the traditional Tinta Roriz, Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca red wine grapes from the Douro wine region in Portugal. Look for ripe blackberry, dark plum and cake spice flavours on this full-bodied red. Pair with game dishes. - Community Wine Reviews
