Posting Wine Reviews and Tasting Notes: Quick Tips

Quick Start: How do I post a wine review?

First, download this custom wine toolbar for your browser to make finding wines and adding reviews fast. It works on all browsers except Safari, so if you use that one, skip this step.

Start with a wine you’ve had recently: you’ll find it here by typing in the short version of the wine’s name in the open Search blank ie just Rosemount Shiraz rather than including vintage and vineyard etc. (Keep the drop-down that currently says “Include Unreviewed” as it is)

Click on your wine, then click on the link “Add My Review” beside the bottle shot. It’s simple and fast.  Add My ReviewThis is all you need to read to get started. The tips below are more advanced and optional. Take small sips over time …

1. Improve your tasting and writing skills: the more you do it, the better you get. By posting your notes, you’ll pay more attention to what you’re tasting and you can see your progress over time. You’ll also get regular tasting note tips to keep improving your game and stay sharp.

2. Drive traffic to your site or blog: you’re posting reviews on this country’s largest wine web site. Every review can also include your own web site or blog address to drive traffic to you.

3. Get more connected on social media: your reviews can be shared there, and when you do, I’ll forward them on to my 30,000 followers and friends.

4. Meet others who share your passion for wine: as a contributor, you’ll be connected to the most active and vibrant wine reviewing community in this country. Share notes, trade tips. If you’re in the same city, meet for drinks or at wine events; if not, connect when you travel. I can also put you in touch with key contacts at wineries when you visit wine regions to get the most from your visit.

5. Create your own tasting journal that you can sort by country, grape, style, vintage, maturity date, food match and so on. Refine your own shopping list and become the go-to expert for your friends.

Can’t find the wine you want to review? Here’s how to add a new vintage for the wine you want to review:

Is there no listing for the wine at all on the site, not even a previous vintage? Then add it here.

How do it edit or delete a review?

Go to your reviews, and click on Update to edit and so on.

How can I share my reviews on social media?

Connect your account on our site with your Twitter account as this will share your reviews with those who follow you rather than having to retype them yourself. You can turn this off anytime, so perhaps give it a test run (look for blue button half way down the page).

As well, every review page has social media buttons for sharing on Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, Google+ and others. Just click on those and it’s easy to post to your followers.

When you share a review on Facebook or Twitter, I’ll forward it to my 30,000 wine-loving friends and followers on social media.

How can I share my reviews with friends?

You can e-mail them the link to your reviews. You can also create lists quickly of your reviews with themes, for example, my favourite wines for BBQ meats or birthday toasts.

How do I personalize and brand my reviews?

Post a picture here to so that those who follow your reviews start to recognize you instantly and visually:

This doesn’t have to be a head shot photo – it can be graphic of a wine glass or whatever you like.

How do I create a tasting journal?

You can add all the wines you taste to your virtual cellar with a one-click transfer from your tasting notes, which can become a tasting journal for you as you can add pictures (not just of the wines, but of the people you were with, the food you were eating) and notes that go beyond the tasting notes, ie memories and observations.

How can I use the mobile app to add tasting notes?

The mobile app works the same way as the site for adding notes. On iPhone and Android, you have the added advantage of using the bar code scanner.
