Utopia Vineyard is located within the Ribbon Ridge American Viticulture Area (AVA). The vineyard is at an elevation of approximately 400 – 500 feet of gently sloping south and south eastern facing slopes and is rich with primarily Willakenzie sedimentary soils.

Vineyard site preparation began in the Summer of 2002 and the first block of 4 acres was completed in Winter 2002 and comprised of 6 different Dijon (115, 667, 777, Wadensville, Swan) and Pommard clones, high-quality Pinot Noir grapes known to produce fine wines with strong flavor and character, earthy aromas, showing tons of dark fruit, red and black cherry and interesting spice on the finish.

The second five acre block was planted in Winter 2005 and contains 5 different Heirloom or Old World clones from old vine cuttings (minimum 37 years old) from famous and well-established Pinot Noir vineyards in Oregon and California. These clones were chosen due to the blending potentials of the clones, as well as the possibilities of stand-alone clonal designated wines. Clones, of course, are not the only factor, root stock, sustainable farming practices, (Utopia is L.I.V.E. certified) non-irrigated vines, proper canopy management, low yields, among others, are all important factors. Our philosophy and long term goal is to make a world class Pinot Noir that reflects the terroir of our vineyard.

Unquenchable by Natalie MacLean

Natalie MacLean is a new force in the wine writing world ‐ a feisty North American answer to Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson. She can write beautifully about wine.

The Financial Times of London

There are very few people in the wine world who "get it" and Natalie is one of those who brings more fun to a buttoned-up and stodgy game.
