In 1996, Anne left a promising career as an officer onboard a Chevron oil tanker to become the first woman to become a Columbia River maritime pilot.

Along the way, she met Vincent, a New Yorker, who after a long maritime career had become a human factors consultant and instructor at the Maritime Institute of Training and Graduate Studies. To make a long story short, Anne married her teacher and they set about to start a new life together in Oregon.

A California native, Anne was well traveled in the state’s wine regions; but had no idea there was a burgeoning wine industry in the Willamette Valley. On a whim, after reading an Oregonian real estate feature on vineyard property, the couple drove down to have a look. Several weeks later the deal was done and they were the proud owners of 21 acres in the Dundee Hills AVA. Two years later, they acquired the “facility” and an additional 90 acres in the Yamhill Carlton District.

Rather than hiring experts to create a wine country lifestyle, they decided to do it themselves. They enrolled in the Northwest Viticulture Center, rolled up their sleeves and got to work growing grapes and making wine. Turns out a lot of those tanker skills were transferable!

Today, Anne continues her work as a Columbia River Pilot and Vincent works more than full time tending to our cows, vines and wines.

Unquenchable by Natalie MacLean

Natalie MacLean is a new force in the wine writing world ‐ a feisty North American answer to Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson. She can write beautifully about wine.

The Financial Times of London

There are very few people in the wine world who "get it" and Natalie is one of those who brings more fun to a buttoned-up and stodgy game.
