Thumbprint cellars’ winemaker, Scott Lindstrom-Dake, has been making wine since 1995. “I developed a palate for fine wine, but as a college student I couldn’t afford to buy it. My mom and step-dad have been growing premium wine grapes for years and the light bulb just kind of went on- I can make my own wine.” So it began; a hobby in college to supplement the ‘cellar’ of him and his wife.

The first vintage was a great success. The wines were enjoyed by friends and family alike (all 4 cases of it), and demand began. As requests for more wine grew over the next vintages, the couple decided to move away from ‘shiners’ (unlabeled bottles), and add a little flair to the wine packaging. Erica happened upon a gold ink pen for writing on glass and Scott used it to write personal messages on each bottle he gave away. During one such episode, the seal on the pen broke and gold ink went dripping everywhere. Scott quickly started trying to capture the gold ink running down the side of the bottle before it hit the counter. On the upsweep motion of his thumb as it released from the bottle, there appeared a perfect thumbprint on the glass. Intrigued, he pressed his thumb to a nearby bottle, then another…. At a gathering that evening, requests flooded for ‘the wine with the thumbprint on it.’ And so thumbprint cellars was born.

Each vintage brought more wine until finally, in 2000, Scott began producing his wine at a bonded facility in Healdsburg, CA. The 2000 harvest gave thumbprint cellars 190 cases of wine. Released November 2002 in the local markets, the 2000 vintage wines sold out in less than 6 months. In May, 2003 the release of the 2001 vintage (727 cases) began. Thumbprint cellars was in high demand throughout Sonoma and Napa county as wholesale accounts were growing and a wine club was established. By June 2004 only a small amount of the 2001 vintage was left.

With all the growth and positive feedback thumbprint cellars was receiving, a tasting room was in order. In late November 2004, Scott and Erica welcomed the public to taste their award winning wines in their first tasting room. The thumbprint cellars Tasting Lounge was the first of its kind in Healdsburg. The couple wanted a different feel for guests while tasting wines. They designed the Lounge to be comfortable and elegant yet approachable and friendly. Small touches like a funky shag rug and bench seating were enjoyed by adults as well as their children who were offered a fantastic toy bag to keep them occupied while their parent’s tasted wine. The concept was a hit and with the help of their wonderful wine club members, friends, and family, thumbprint cellars was recognized across the country.

It wasn’t long before thumbprint cellars needed to expand operations to accommodate the sales of their 4500 case production. In December 2009, thumbprint unveiled their new tasting Lounge in downtown Healdsburg. The new space at 102 Matheson Street is large enough to accommodate events, yet intimate enough to continue to house the art gallery and visiting artists.
The unique blends and award winning wines featuring the exclusive thumbprint signature continue to bring wine club members and friends from all over to experience the eclectic and fun vibe thumbprint has to offer. Erica and Scott Lindstrom-Dake, proprietors and wine maker, are always in awe of the beauty and bounty that Sonoma County has to offer. They are proud to see thumbprint cellars take its place alongside the many fantastic wine producers of Sonoma County (and the world!).
