The location where the grape farmer grows and harvests the fruit of the vines which have been nurtured by the unique soil and climate of his land and the cultivation practices of his hand. The harvest is then developed by the winemaker with science, art and the grace of God to become the beverage of enjoyment, moderation, peace, and contentment. The Winery (Robert F. Pliska & Company Winery) is nestled in the foothills between the Appalachian and Allegheny front mountains in the southwestern corner of Hampshire Co., West Virginia.

THE GRAPES utilized by The Winery are those developed by genetic and plant hybridization as the successors to the Old World famous Vitis Vinifera. These new grapes are now establishing a reputation for themselves in blind wine tasting throughout the world. In addition , the special and unique qualities of the wines produced by these grapes are also a result of the locations in which they are grown, the care of the vines, and practices of the winemaker.

Wine plays an important part in the history of man. One can become intimidated by such heritage. Our wines are wines to enjoy, grown in a new viticulture area of the United States. The grapes in our wines are grown on the shale slopes of Hampshire Co. The juice of these grapes is locked away in air-tight stainless steel "safes" at harvest time and allowed to develop into the wines we are proud to have you see and to taste, products of nature and the old country techniques of wine development. Since they are a natural product, they are unlike factorized wines so often distributed. We will be glad to share with you the technical aspects of winemaking when you visit our vineyard and winery. The social aspects we relate to you now so that you can best enjoy your wine.

EACH WINE is, like you, unique in personality and in character. Our Assumption, 101 Piterra Place, and our Mountain Mama (an apple wine) should be served at cool room temperature; about 55-60 degree Fahrenheit would be fine. Most of our wines are created for the mature wine palate, very dry to expose the true character of West Virginia grapes in all of their complexity and excellence. We also offer for your enjoyment a Ridge Runner Red and Ridge Runner Gold, very pleasant semi-dry table wines. As some of our young wines age , you may observe sediment development or grape acid precipitation in the form of wine crystals. This phenomena is your guarantee that the wine has been produced naturally. This also provides one with the reason why many other fine wines also require decanting as they age prior to serving at your table.

ANOTHER ASPECT relating to the Old Country elegant ideal of winemaking is the fact that Homes for the Mentally Handicapped, Ltd is being assisted by sales and consumption of the Pliska & Company Winery wines. As with may small vineyards and wineries in Europe, The Winery believes in tradition that part of what we receive as a benefit from the land should be returned the charitable purposes. HMH Ltd. is an IRS tax exempt organization providing homes, work, recreation activities for mentally retarded adults in rural areas. Thus, when you select our wines as gifts, or for your own consumption, it is very appropriate that part of your financial outlay benefits too those weaker and gentle members of our society, the mentally handicapped.
