Welcome to Valley View Farm, home of the Swedenburg Estate Vineyard. Juanita and Wayne Swedenburg dreamt of living where they could enjoy themselves while also working the land in order to make their home financially self-sufficient. Their careers had taken them around the world several times, so they considered a coffee plantation in Kenya, a cattle ranch in Costa Rica, as well as a bed and breakfast in the Cayman Islands (that would have been sweet!). Fortunately, they found the beautiful foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Northern Virginia and the quaint town of Middleburg. Being Mid-West farmers from birth, the Swedenburg family researched properties across the region looking for the right mix of good pastures, easy road access, fertile soils, and plenty of water. Their search ended at Valley View Farm which has been in continuous agriculture for the past 200+ years. The original farm, as many in the region, has shrunk over the many decades though our family resides in the original manor house built prior to the Revolutionary War. Upon arriving at the farm, Juanita insisted that cattle would be bred on this farm so their first purchase was 25 head of pure bred Black Angus. In the mid-1980’s, grape production was considered as a good alternative to standard crops such as corn and soybean. The family kept the initial investment lower by installing the trellis system and planting of the vines themselves. In 1987, the first crush of the winery was experienced. The winery operation has been a family oriented venture ever since. We are continually learning how to improve grape quality and production. The wine-making is continuously evolving through the many contributions of professionals and friends that provide assistance and guidance. Our family focuses on making very small quantities of wine around 1,000 to 1,500 cases annually. Wayne was quoted as saying, “We make enough wine for the family with a little left over to sell”.
Juanita and Wayne Swedenburg have passed on with their ashes spread across their beloved Valley View Farm. The next generation continues the adventure………….

Unquenchable by Natalie MacLean

Natalie MacLean is a new force in the wine writing world ‐ a feisty North American answer to Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson. She can write beautifully about wine.

The Financial Times of London

There are very few people in the wine world who "get it" and Natalie is one of those who brings more fun to a buttoned-up and stodgy game.
