Sierra Ridge Vineyards & Winery was established in 1988 by John L. Bree & his wife Debbie. John L Bree is a third generation California grape grower and winemaker. Now family owned and operated by John L Bree his son John H Bree , Gretchen & Jeffrey Brown, daughter and son in law of John L & Debbie Bree. The staff at Sierra Ridge Winery also includes Eric Costa, assistant wine maker & Jan Geringer tasting room manager and event planning.

The Bree family got their start in the wine industry at the turn of the century when John L. Bree’s Grandfather Horace O. Lanza began the first family winery in Buffalo New York. Horace O. Lanza was born in 1881 in the small village of Valledolmo Sicily. In 1893 he immigrated to New York at the age of 12. In 1902 at the age of 21 Horace & his brother began the family’s first winery. Later, in 1911 Horace moved the family business from New York to Northern California. While in Northern California (San Francisco) he established "California Grape Products". John L Bree learned many things from his Grandfather which sparked his passion. He took this passion to Oregon State, & then to UC Davis where he received his degree in viticulture and enology. He has traveled the world as a consultant in vineyard & winery operations; from Egypt, the former Yugoslavia, Tunisia, & India to name a few. His travels later led him to Sutter Creek CA. wherein he fell in love with a piece of land that is now known as Sierra Ridge Vineyards & Winery.
Twenty three different varieties of grapes are produced in the vineyard. The winery's flagship wine, Pinotage, is a variety from South Africa brought here by John L. It is believed that we are the largest producer of Pinotage in the entire United States.

Our Italian varietal program includes, Nebbiolo, Sangiovese, Aglianico, Freisa & Barbera.
The more classic Bordeaux varieties produced are Merlot, Grenache, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc. All are estate grown.

Natalie MacLean is a new force in the wine writing world ‐ a feisty North American answer to Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson. She can write beautifully about wine.

The Financial Times of London

There are very few people in the wine world who "get it" and Natalie is one of those who brings more fun to a buttoned-up and stodgy game.
