Ron Mark is a native Iowan from the small community of Rising Sun located just east of Des Moines, Iowa. In 1997 Summerset Winery officially opened. Ron planted an acre of grapes every year until the vineyard reached its current size of 12+ acres with 9 varieties of grapes. French hybrids and American varietals make up what is now the Summerset Vineyard. The wine making and processing was originally set up in the Mark’s attached garage, and the retail/tasting room was located in the walkout basement (formerly the home of the Mark’s). In 2001 the Mark’s built a beautiful and spacious upscale barn that houses the retail tasting room, the winery, and two banquet rooms that may be utilized for meetings, parties, wedding ceremonies and receptions. The Marks also opened and operated a bed and breakfast called Summerset Inn from 1995 to 2006. The Marks chose to close the bed and breakfast in 2006 to spend more time building the wine business.
Summerset Winery has a enjoyed 20% (+) increase in sales every year it has been in existence. 150,000 bottles of wine will be produced this year alone in our cellar. In addition, Ron is also in control of over 100 acres of Iowa grapes through agreements with other farmers. Over the years the Mark’s have taken on more staff to help run the business and now employ 5 fulltime staff members and many part timers to help out on weekends and events.

Red, White & Drunk all over by Natalie MacLean

Natalie MacLean writes about wine with a sensuous obsession... and often laugh-out-loud funny... Terrific.

Unquenchable by Natalie MacLean

Natalie MacLean is a new force in the wine writing world ‐ a feisty North American answer to Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson. She can write beautifully about wine.

The Financial Times of London

There are very few people in the wine world who "get it" and Natalie is one of those who brings more fun to a buttoned-up and stodgy game.
