Small Vines Viticulture is owned and operated by the husband-wife team of Paul Sloan & Kathryn McGrath Sloan. The foundation of this company is the love they share for fun, fine wine, friends, and the beautiful outdoors.

Paul Sloan, the viticulturist, first realized his passion for wine as a wine steward at the restaurant John Ash and Company. This position gave him the opportunity to receive a considerable amount of wine education, training, and knowledge.

In 1995, he and fellow wine steward, Mathew Gustafson, won the Greenwood Ridge California State Wine Tasting Championship, Professionals Category.

Being a third generation Sonoma County native and a real lover of the outdoors, it was only a matter of time until Paul found his way into the vineyard. Even though he studied under Rich Thomas at the Santa Rosa Junior College, his personal research and studies brought him to his European derived philosophies. Paul gained much of his valuable experience under the time proven guidance of his cherished mentor, Warren Dutton / Dutton ranches.

Paul and Kathryn Sloan started their own company, Small Vines Viticulture in 1998. Our philosophy is that high-density plantings focus the energy of the vine into smaller, more intensely flavorful clusters, producing better quality wine. Our approach is different from the California norm. We strive to innovate -- not duplicate. We order and hand select the highest quality plant material from some of the best-known sources in California. Most of these vines are heat-treated, protecting the vines from certain diseases. In an attempt to move towards organic farming, vines are planted with nutrient rich worm castings. Delicate young plants do need water, but we hope to dry farm these vineyards once mature.

European-style, vertical trellis systems are installed to direct shoot growth in an upright pattern exposing the fruit to increased sunlight and air circulation. This is especially important in our cool coastal region where sun exposure and aeration are a necessity.

Unquenchable by Natalie MacLean

Natalie MacLean is a new force in the wine writing world ‐ a feisty North American answer to Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson. She can write beautifully about wine.

The Financial Times of London

There are very few people in the wine world who "get it" and Natalie is one of those who brings more fun to a buttoned-up and stodgy game.
