Hank and Maggie Skewis founded Skewis Wines with the intention of producing high quality, vineyard designated Pinot Noirs from The North Coast region of California. The first grapes were purchased in 1994 from the Floodgate Vineyard in Mendocino County's Anderson Valley. In subsequent years we have contracted for fruit from additional vineyards in the Anderson and Russian River Valleys.

Our annual production has increased slowly to the current level of 900 cases released in 2005.
How time flies when you’re having fun! We have grown from a mere 70 cases for the 1994 vintage to 950 cases in 2001. Throughout the valley yields were low for 2004 and our total production for this vintage is 750 cases. We’re often asked when we plan to increase our production, open a tasting room, etc. Our answer is there’s a beauty to staying small. We can maintain a close relationship with our growers, manage our business without the complications of staff and most importantly be available for our customers. We know many of you have been surprised when meeting us at our glorified garage. For those who are new to the “micro” winemaker’s world, our facility has been an eye opener. We share the cost of equipment with other winemakers, help each other during crush, and in general keep our overhead low to match our projected income. Our plan is to produce no more than 1000 cases of the best wine possible, keep life simple and enjoy it!

Natalie MacLean is a new force in the wine writing world ‐ a feisty North American answer to Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson. She can write beautifully about wine.

The Financial Times of London

There are very few people in the wine world who "get it" and Natalie is one of those who brings more fun to a buttoned-up and stodgy game.
