After searching for three years, in October, 1988, Kal and Dorothy Showket bought a beautiful property in the hills overlooking Oakville in the heart of Napa Valley.
The Showkets knew they had a unique location, but they also knew they had much hard work ahead of them in order to bring the vineyard up to its potential. They contracted with well-respected and highly reputable Pina Vineyard Management, to help them renew the vineyard. All vines have since been replaced.
The soils of Oakville are known to be one of the top winegrowing regions in the world for Cabernet Sauvignon. The concentration of cult wineries in this area is a testament to the high quality of wines this part of the world can produce. Within the Oakville appellation, Showket Vineyards with an elevation of approximately 600 feet is perched in the hills above Silverado Trail. With neighbors like Dalle Valle, Vine Cliff, Phelps’ Backus vineyard, Oakville Ranch, Turnbull’s Weitz Vineyard and sitting above Screaming Eagle and Rudd Estate—this is undeniable prime Cabernet real estate.
The vineyard, which is planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Sangiovese experiences slightly cooler temperatures in the summer than the valley floor and slightly warmer ones in the winter. Because of the elevation and orientation of the vineyard no frost protection is required. The soil is clay-loam type that is very rocky.
The goal Thomas and Russell have set is to showcase the vineyards’ voice and balance while also crafting a wine that displays Oakville’s telltale black fruits and concentration. We expect that all of our long time supporters will notice an improvement. Our winemakers are confident that the vineyard will show itself in the wines. When you taste together our older vintages and future wines, it will be obvious that they are siblings.
This harvest “Team Showket”, as we’ve begun to call ourselves, takes a very hands on approach to every vintage. It starts with regular walks through the vineyard and debates on when to harvest and quickly changes to an all hands on deck approach. The first change was to identify separate blocks, divided by clone or location in the vineyard. We then harveste all of them independently and have kept them separate, treating each lot as if it were its own wine. In addition we keep some of our merlot, and for the first time, our entire cabernet franc for ourselves.
