We are pleased to announce the release of our 2005 Sherwin Family Vineyards Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, our 10th vintage of Estate Cabernet. It’s hard to believe that so much time has passed. It seems like just yesterday that we were clearing the land, planting the vineyard, and dreaming of what has now become Sherwin Family Vineyards.

As always, the 2005 vintage is made entirely from fruit from our 16-acre vineyard at the top of Spring Mountain. Comprised of 80 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 12 percent Merlot, and 8 percent Cabernet Franc, the wine was aged for 20 months in new French oak and then aged another six months in bottle prior to release. This wine shows the lush fruit and intensity of our mountaintop growing conditions, with hints of mocha and well-integrated tannins. 1,270 cases were produced. If you haven’t visited us recently, on your visit you will notice that Steve has been one busy guy. The outdoor fireplace and expanded patio at the winery are complete and our newest addition - the Bocce court - is ready for action.

Steve began clearing and planting vineyards around the three original acres virtually by himself. He planted Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot and finished thirteen acres later. The new acreage is actually broken up into three vineyards named after the children: Jenny, Lindsey and Matthew.Sherwin Family Vineyards released their first wine, a 1996 Spring Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon in late 1999. A scant 140 cases were produced and quickly discovered by several local restaurants and retailers. Marked by the firm backbone of Spring Mountain grown fruit, the 1996 Cabernet Sauvignon shows remarkable density and concentration for a first release. Produced, cellared and bottled on the property at an existing winery building, Steve employed traditional winemaking methods of fermenting in one-ton bins, along with hand punch downs and hand racking. Steve and Linda employed traditional distribution practices as well, delivering all of their first vintage to accounts by themselves.

Natalie MacLean is a new force in the wine writing world ‐ a feisty North American answer to Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson. She can write beautifully about wine.

The Financial Times of London

There are very few people in the wine world who "get it" and Natalie is one of those who brings more fun to a buttoned-up and stodgy game.
