Quality is a term that has been trivialized, used by purveyors from McDonald’s to Verizon to K-Mart. Genuine quality is harder to come by and does not mean simply well-made or acceptable. Real quality is that which is superior. It is the result of thought, analysis, communication, sweat and honest-to-God hard labor, succinctly stated by Mr. Ruskin as “intelligent effort”. True quality is giving each customer no less than exactly what they want and need. ALFRED G. SCHEID is Chairman of the Board of Scheid Vineyards. Known by everyone as Al, he was one of the founders of the company in 1972 along with E. F. Hutton & Company and has served continuously since that time. Up until 1988, Al was involved in various other business opportunities in addition to the vineyard business, including a color graphics firm and the founding of two biotechnology companies for which he served as CEO. In 1988, he bought out the interests of E. F. Hutton, becoming the sole owner of Scheid Vineyards. Al served as the company's Chief Executive Officer until 2002, when the CEO role was assumed by Scott D. Scheid.

Al is a founder of the California Association of Winegrape Growers, a trade association that represents the interests of California wine grape producers, and has served as its chairman.

Red, White & Drunk all over by Natalie MacLean

Natalie MacLean writes about wine with a sensuous obsession... and often laugh-out-loud funny... Terrific.

Rex Pickett, Sideways

Ms. MacLean is the disarming Everywoman. She loves wine, loves drinking ... ultimately, it's a winning formula.

  Best Books of the Year

Unquenchable by Natalie MacLean

Natalie MacLean is a new force in the wine writing world ‐ a feisty North American answer to Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson. She can write beautifully about wine.

The Financial Times of London

There are very few people in the wine world who "get it" and Natalie is one of those who brings more fun to a buttoned-up and stodgy game.
