We moved to the Napa Valley thirty years ago because we wanted to live in an agrarian setting. We had no intention of growing grapes, or making wine, or running a Bed and Breakfast.
However, shortly after moving in, our neighbor, George Hendry, suggested we plant grapevines on the three acre meadow in front of our home. He has been growing grapes in the valley most of his life, so we were confident he knew what he was talking about. With George’s help and advice, we planted three acres of grapevines and named our vineyard Brookside Vineyard because Redwood Creek flows through our property.
Then a colleague suggested that our rambling, Mediterranean style home had an ideal floor plan and ample space for a Bed and Breakfast. We thought about it and agreed . In 1987 we launched Brookside Vineyard Bed and Breakfast.
In 2001, our friend, Gary Miller, used some of the Syrah from our vineyard for his Miller Wine Works label. It was the first time a wine was made with 100% Brookside Vineyard Syrah, and we loved the wine. So by the time the 2002 vintage rolled around, we had decided to use some of our grapes to make our own wine and the Sand T Cellars label was born.
Here we are thirty years later. The two people who moved to Napa just to live in the country are growing grapes, making wine and running a Bed & Breakfast. So much for having a master plan. The wine has a rich, round mouth filling texture with the scent of violets, spice and smoke. It has a complexity of flavors including boysenberry, black currant, and sweet tobacco. It drinks well now and will age for five more years.

Natalie MacLean is a new force in the wine writing world ‐ a feisty North American answer to Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson. She can write beautifully about wine.

The Financial Times of London

There are very few people in the wine world who "get it" and Natalie is one of those who brings more fun to a buttoned-up and stodgy game.
