After spending time studying viticulture and enology at the University of California Extension in Napa, working in local cellars, and making wines for themselves and friends, Chuck and Mary Ann took the plunge into full-time commercial winemaking. Sable Ridge was founded in the fall of 1995.

Since the first release in 1996, Sable Ridge wines have been creative expressions of hand crafted wines from select vineyards. Rich and balanced Zinfandels from old vines have become staples in the Sable Ridge line up. The discovery of great Lodi vineyards and the delicious and elegant wines made from this area's plantings has led to regular bottlings of Sable Ridge reds from the region. An ongoing vision has led to distinctive wines made from grapes grown in old vine vineyards in the Russian River Valley, Alexander Valley and Sonoma Valley. maintained by Santa Rosa Localco.

The Sable Ridge winemaking facility is located in the beautiful Bennett Valley. Though officially placed inside the Sonoma Valley American Viticultural Area, Bennett Valley is in fact a distinct valley all its own, with a terroir influenced by long, warm afternoons and the regular arrival of late evening fog from the west and north. Here, surrounding the Sable Ridge winery, lies six acres of carefully chosen Syrah vines that form an important part of the winery's identity. Sable Ridge is committed to extracting the full potential of carefully cultivated Bennett Valley Syrah.

Chuck Barr is the managing partner at Sable Ridge today. Mary Ann is involved in some of the winery's marketing efforts.

Unquenchable by Natalie MacLean

Natalie MacLean is a new force in the wine writing world ‐ a feisty North American answer to Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson. She can write beautifully about wine.

The Financial Times of London

There are very few people in the wine world who "get it" and Natalie is one of those who brings more fun to a buttoned-up and stodgy game.
