THE WINERY AT A GLANCE
1994: Rutherford Grove Winery & Vineyards opens it doors with a new tasting room.
1995: Winemaker Andy Pestoni produces Rutherford Grove Winery’s first Cabernet Sauvignon vintage.
1997: Rutherford Grove Winery & Vineyards begins sustainable farming of its 22 acres in the Rutherford Appellation.
2001: Rutherford Grove Winery & Vineyards plants 13 acres on their Howell Mountain property in the historic Howell Mountain Appellation.
2003: Rutherford Grove Winery & Vineyards becomes an entirely Estate producing winery.
2003: Rutherford Grove Winery & Vineyards plants 14 acres on their Lake County property in the Lake County Appellation, bringing the family’s vineyard acreage to 49.
2007: Rutherford Grove Winery & Vineyards launches its 2004 Estate Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon, which quickly receives 90 points from the Wine Spectator.
WINE STYLE: Rutherford Grove makes elegant, single lot wine that can be drunk at release but which will also age for years to come. Winemaker Andy Pestoni believes that wine is made in the vineyard and that his role is to be a good steward of what’s already there. He endeavors to gently transform the fruit he grows into memorable wine.

WINEMAKING PROCESS: Hands on, starting with sorting the grapes as they come in from the vineyard. There is no crushing of the grapes – whole berries are sent to the fermenter and crushed by their own weight, which produces an intense fruit-flavored, distinctive wine. Andy employs extended maceration if the vineyard block calls for it and vinifies each lot based on its characteristics.
SAUVIGNON BLANC: The wine is blended after the grapes are whole-cluster- pressed, which keep this varietal’s natural herbaceous flavor in the background. Andy ferments and ages seven months in stainless steel tanks and stainless steel barrels. In the latter, he ferments the juice sur lie, frequently stirring the lees (“battonnage”). Oak is not used in the winemaking.
CABERNET SAUVIGNON, MERLOT, SANGIOVESE: Cold soaking is done for only 48 hours. All of the red wines age in 30% to 50% new French oak with each vintage. Prior to bottling Andy “fines” with egg whites.
PETITE SIRAH: Because this varietal can be very tannic, Andy uses ripe grapes, gentle maceration, and moderate barrel aging, which creates a wine that is drinkable from an early age.

Natalie MacLean is a new force in the wine writing world ‐ a feisty North American answer to Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson. She can write beautifully about wine.

The Financial Times of London

There are very few people in the wine world who "get it" and Natalie is one of those who brings more fun to a buttoned-up and stodgy game.
