After years of planting and politicking, a family physician has realized his dream of opening a winery.

Saturday John and Sue Bond held the grand opening of their Rock Springs Winery on their rural hillside property in Carter County.

We've had quite a nice grand opening,” John Bond said. “A lot of people we know and a lot of people we don't know showed support for us. We really appreciate it."

What's most unique about this achievement is they did it in a county that doesn't allow alcohol sales.

Two years ago voters in the Iron Hill precinct made an exception when they decided by a 3-1 margin to allow the Bonds to sell wine.

"I think it's great,” Grayson resident Charlotte Sparks said. “We voted for it because we used to go to a winery in Ohio. We always made a day of it. It's great to have this here. It's a good tourist attraction. We need more of this in Carter County."

The Bonds say their winery has the ingredients to become a family destination.

"We tried to convince them we weren't going to make a bootlegger, get people fast drunk,” John Bond said. “It's just a touristy thing that people enjoy coming out for, maybe having a bottle of wine, relaxing."

With 8 acres of grapes and three thousand cases of wine ready for distribution, the fruit of the Bonds' labor is finally paying off.

The Bonds hope their winery gives a boost to the local economy by keeping farmers' grapes and money in Carter County rather than other counties that allow alcohol sales.
