Penny Aguirre and Mike Bullock purchased the property in the fall of 2007. In the spring of 2008, they planted three varieties of cold hardy grapes: LaCrescent, Frontenac Gris, and Marquette. In June of 2009, they bottled approximately 5,000 bottles of five wines and began selling them in liquor stores in Minnesota. Penny and Mike were pleased to welcome Vicky Johnson as a partner in 2010.

That same year, Richwood Winery bottled about 6,000 bottles of nine distinctive wines and were excited that three of the new wines were made with the addition of blue agave nectar as a sweetener. In August of 2010, the tasting room opened and is currently open Thursday through Sunday from 1 to 6 PM, May through October.

Minnesota Farm Winery rules dictate that a winery in Minnesota must use 51% Minnesota grown grapes, so they are purchasing their Minnesota grapes from around the state and buying Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Pinot Noir from California. The grape vines in the Richwood vineyard began producing grapes for wine making the fall of 2011. The grapes are crushed and the wine made and bottled in the wine laboratory at the winery.

Natalie MacLean is a new force in the wine writing world ‐ a feisty North American answer to Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson. She can write beautifully about wine.

The Financial Times of London

There are very few people in the wine world who "get it" and Natalie is one of those who brings more fun to a buttoned-up and stodgy game.
