Salvador Renteria arrived at Sterling Vineyards in 1962 from Mexico working first as a field laborer, then a vineyard supervisor. After several years, Salvador left to oversee the formative vineyards of Beaulieu Vineyards, Clos Pegase, Cuvaison and Silverado. While working these vineyards, Salvador initiated novel vineyard experiments which earned the respect of famed vintners such as Andre Tchelistcheff, Rick Forman and John Thache. In 1993, Oscar Renteria was passed the torch and assumed proprietorship of Renteria Vineyard Management. Oscar has continued to care for the handful of distinguished vineyards his father cultivated and progressively increased their clientele.Renteria Vineyard Management, Inc. has become the third largest vineyard management company in the North Bay Area. “We manage about 1,500 acres of prime vineyard land, and continually seek to increase the quality of these geographically diverse vineyards,” says Oscar. He has implemented new approaches in vineyard technology. While father and son are always hands-on and close to the fields, Oscar believes, “that the infusion of technology is a benefit for the future.” By combining practical, generational field knowledge with innovative trials and experimentations, the Renteria Family has found the balance to produce the finest grapes possible.

The Renteria's are building a winery and a cave system on Mt.Veeder for the family's wine line, Renteria Wines. With Oscar Renteria assisting, winemaker Karen Culler produces 1,100 cases annually, mostly Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir, as well as 400 cases of a secondary Cabernet label, Salva Tierra. The goal is 5,000 cases a year. She produces Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and a Meritage blend, using the “Cabernet family grapes”. Ideally, she is working toward making vineyard designated wines which would not only showcase the vineyard’s qualities, but also honor the grower’s efforts in the winemaking process.

Unquenchable by Natalie MacLean

Natalie MacLean is a new force in the wine writing world ‐ a feisty North American answer to Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson. She can write beautifully about wine.

The Financial Times of London

There are very few people in the wine world who "get it" and Natalie is one of those who brings more fun to a buttoned-up and stodgy game.
