Located on gently rolling hills eight miles east of town, the property was planted in the late 1880s by Gerd and Ilsabe Klintworth with Zinfandel, Alicante Bouschet and Burger. The old vines were planted on their own roots using 10 foot x 10 foot spacing in the southwest corner of the property where Cripple Creek runs through it. The location benefits from the Templeton Gap influences, and as a result experiences the 40-degree day to night temperature differentials, which the vines love. When Peter and Marilyn Ashkin bought the ranch in 1997, the old vines were fodder for the deer, and Marilyn’s passion became the revival of these old vines. Peter and Marilyn Ashkin have pursued their passion for growing great wine since 1997 when they bought the Klintworth family property, site of what some say is the oldest vineyard in Paso Robles, and chose to bring back the old Zinfandel vineyard as well as plant Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Malbec. In 2001, the Ashkins purchased the Beckwith vineyard, a westside treasure of Zinfandel and Pinot Noir. Peter, ever the engineer, is the Chief Equipment Officer (“CEO”) of Red Head Ranch as well as holder of the “day job”, while Marilyn oversees the day-to-day operations of the ranch and continues the relentless pursuit of quality in the vineyard.

Unquenchable by Natalie MacLean

Natalie MacLean is a new force in the wine writing world ‐ a feisty North American answer to Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson. She can write beautifully about wine.

The Financial Times of London

There are very few people in the wine world who "get it" and Natalie is one of those who brings more fun to a buttoned-up and stodgy game.
