Contact: Naomi Griffin

Old Stone Winery was founded in 2001 by Mark, Barbara and Marcus Brown. In the summer of 2009, Darin and Naomi Griffin purchased it after years of enjoying wine. Our love of wine started in Germany, as we spent 4 years living less than an hour outside the Rheingau region. Our day trips into the Rheingau, and the summer wine festivals had a lasting impression that we couldn’t resist.

Darin spent eight years as an OH-58D Kiowa Warrior helicopter pilot in the U.S. Army. Having commanded in combat and served everywhere from Germany, to Kosovo, to Iraq, he decided to hang up his cavalry spurs in 2004 and pursue a more stable career with GE. Moving to Charlotte in the summer of 2004, Darin joined GE Plastics and embarked on a career in supply chain/operations management. After five years in the plastics industry, he decided that wine was much more interesting.

Naomi also spent eight years in the U.S. Army, as a Nuclear-Biological-Chemical warfare defense officer. She too spent time deployed everywhere from the rolling hills of Kosovo to the beautiful deserts of Iraq. After moving to Charlotte, she worked for several years as a pharmaceutical sales specialist for AstraZeneca. Since moving to Charlotte, Darin and Naomi have added two sons to the family… there’s never a dull moment!

The 130 acre estate currently has over 20 acres of Muscadine grapes planted in the vineyard. In addition to the Muscadines, Old Stone sources wine grapes as locally as possible, with many coming out of Rowan county.

Our wines are currently available at many Harris Teeter stores, Food Lion stores, Total Wine and More, some specialty shops and various restaurants located throughout North Carolina. We also ship wines all over the country. Our wines range from sweet to dry, both red and white.

While many of our wines have won awards, several stand out. Our Sweet Muscadine wine won the 2008 Muscadine Cup and our 2007 Chambourcin won a Double Gold at the N.C. State Fair. We are open daily with the exception of Monday.

Although our path to winery ownership has been anything but “standard,” we’re lucky to have the unwavering support of friends and family.

Unquenchable by Natalie MacLean

Natalie MacLean is a new force in the wine writing world ‐ a feisty North American answer to Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson. She can write beautifully about wine.

The Financial Times of London

There are very few people in the wine world who "get it" and Natalie is one of those who brings more fun to a buttoned-up and stodgy game.
