Madrone Mountain is the realization of a dream. In 1980, Don Mixon graduated from the University of Texas with a B.A.in English literature and an impressive collection of student loans. He faced a choice – the safe, sane and sober path of law school and practice or a plunge head-on into the abyss, moving to California and enrolling at U.C. Davis in the Enology program. Twenty-two years and a law career later, Don, and his partner, Bret Gilmore, bought twelve acres of land on a mountainside near the old Gold Rush town of Jacksonville in Southern Oregon and embarked upon the road not taken. Madrone Mountain was born.

Years have passed and, as we look back on those beginnings, we credit our survival to dumb luck and the good fortune to have settled among wonderful friends and neighbors who generously shared with us their knowledge, skill and the fruits of their vineyards. We have learned much in those years, about wine and winemaking, yes, but more importantly, about our many connections – to the soil and the vine, to the rhythm of the seasons and to our neighbors and our community. Most of all, we have begun to understand our profound obligation to the land and to the other living things that, just like us, depend upon it.

Ms. MacLean is the disarming Everywoman. She loves wine, loves drinking ... ultimately, it's a winning formula.

Unquenchable by Natalie MacLean

Natalie MacLean is a new force in the wine writing world ‐ a feisty North American answer to Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson. She can write beautifully about wine.

The Financial Times of London

There are very few people in the wine world who "get it" and Natalie is one of those who brings more fun to a buttoned-up and stodgy game.
