Juniper Well Ranch was purchased by prolific western author, Frank Bonham and his wife Gloria in 1980. At an elevation of just under 5000 feet, the fifty acre guest ranch at the base of Granite Mountain is bordered by forest service land and the Santa Fe/Burlington railroad. Juniper Well Ranch was once part of the Bar U Bar ranch which is now its northern neighbor. The historic rock well house, from which the ranch gets its name, was built around the turn of the 20th century by Arizona state senator, Mullins. The ancient Alligator Bark Juniper Tree next to it welcomes visitors as they drive through the gate. Frank Bonham continued to write and publish novels from his hilltop log home until his death in 1988.
Frank's son David moved to the property in 1983 and began boarding horses from the original Ranch House and barn on the property. In 1990 David buiilt the first of two log cabins to be used for guests, thus launching his career as an innkeeper. In 1993 he built the Adobe cabin from adobe bricks he made on site. The beautiful, secluded location has charmed thousands of guests over the years, many of whom return year after year to enjoy the Bonham hospitality and the tranquility of the location.
Juniper Well Ranch is located 25 minutes from Downtown Prescott in Tonto Flats, a sub irrigated area with abundant ground water which feeds the ancient Juniper trees, as well as Cttonwood, Black Walnut, Pine, Black Jack and Gamble Oak and Manzanita. Wildlife such as bobcat, deer, rabbits, javalina, coyotes, squirrel and birds of prey can be spotted from the cabins. Gardens and vineyards have been planted making the area even more attractive for weddings, retreats, reunions and more.
The latest venture for Dave and Linda is harvesting wine grapes grown on the property and making their own wine as they become a domestic farm winery . Look for Juniper Well wines in 2008 as they continue to enhance the ranch for guests. The Bonhams welcome you to experience the history, majestic mountains, horses, rugged wildlife and charming cabins as their guests on the ranch.
