John built Hawley Winery, in 1996, on his Bradford Mountain estate, overlooking Dry Creek Valley. Today, he and his two sons, Paul and Austin, grow ten acres of CCOF organic vineyards and produce small lots of nine different wines. Bradford Mountain perches above the Dry Creek Valley at over 1,000 feet above sea level. On the rocky Eastern slopes, Hawley Vineyard and Winery sits well above the fog that blankets the valley-floor most mornings. The hillside soil is rocky and dry; the topsoil washed down to the valley floor centuries ago. Our vines have to toil for water and nutrients and it is through this struggle that great grapes are born. Ten acres of the estate are planted to grapes: Merlot, Cabernet, Zinfandel and Viognier. John and his two sons, Paul and Austin, work the vineyard with advice and support from long time friend, and vineyard manager, John Clendenen.
