Grassy Creek Vineyard & Winery, founded in 2003 among the green hills surrounding Elkin at the historical Klondike Cabins, produces fine wines from North Carolina’s premier Yadkin Valley wine country.

The Rice and Douthit families share a love for wine and enjoy entertaining friends and family. In 2003, Derrill and Lori Rice joined Jim and Cynthia Douthit to create Grassy Creek Vineyard & Winery at this historic site locally known as Klondike Farm. The Rices and Douthits, have been joined by the Clark, Nycum, and Childress families. These families, along with a cast of supporting relatives and friends, have planted, pruned, tubed, mowed, sprayed, picked, de-stemmed, stomped, crushed, fermented, pumped, racked, filled, corked, capped, labeled, boxed, marketed, sold, delivered, and of course tasted to make Grassy Creek Vineyard & Winery your must see destination when discovering the wines of North Carolina.

Located in the heart of the North Carolina wine industry, the Yadkin Valley is the only federally designated viticulture region in the State. The rich soil, rolling hills, and moderate climate create ideal conditions for growing grapes rich and robust in flavor. The continued emergence of new vineyard and winery projects across the state is breathing new life in the area's tourism industry. The nation's wine industry began with the muscadine grape in North Carolina over a hundred years ago. Although early in its development, the Yadkin Valley is poised to become an internationally recognized region for world-class wines.

In the early 1920's, John Hanes of Hanes Hosiery bought a one room cabin on over one thousand acres of land surrounding a small stream called Grassy Creek. Thurmond Chatham of Chatham Manufacturing Company married John Hanes’ sister, Lucy, and later started a working dairy farm at this site still remembered today for “the best chocolate milk in the world”! Prize herds of “Golden Guernsey” cattle were raised, polo ponies were bred, and bird dogs were trained. Today, a turn down Chatham Lodge Lane is a step back in time and away from civilization. At any moment you can see a herd of deer running through the fields, a flock of geese landing on the lake, and turkeys, dove, quail, or rabbits all waiting to surprise you.

Natalie MacLean is a new force in the wine writing world ‐ a feisty North American answer to Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson. She can write beautifully about wine.

The Financial Times of London

There are very few people in the wine world who "get it" and Natalie is one of those who brings more fun to a buttoned-up and stodgy game.
