Nestled in the heart of Nelson County wine country, Flying Fox Vineyard is a small, family-run winery. After many years of growing grapes we recently made the leap and started producing our own wines.

We invite you to come by and taste our limited production wines including Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Viognier. A winter fireplace and summer patio will encourage you to linger a while at Flying Fox as you “Explore Nelson Wine.”

Our vineyard is six and a half acres, planted to red varieties. The Merlot and Cabernet Franc are trained to a Smart-Dyson trellis and the Petit Verdot is on VSP (vertically shoot positioned) trellis. We both love spending time working in the vineyard. It is peaceful, methodical work in a beautiful setting. Watching the vines come back to life in the spring, the trunks a little bigger and more gnarled each year, the rapid growth of the leaf canopy and finally ripening of the grapes and harvest, have come to define our year. We have enticed family members Jane and Jon Zieman to join the viticulture community in Virginia and they now grow our Viognier grapes at Ridge Run Vineyard in Stuart’s Draft.

Many of you have asked... "where did you get the name Flying Fox?". We got the idea from the weathervane on the roof of our main building at the vineyard. It is a typical running fox weathervane, but after a hard day working on the vines and a glass of wine, he looks like he is flying above the vineyard.

Unquenchable by Natalie MacLean

Natalie MacLean is a new force in the wine writing world ‐ a feisty North American answer to Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson. She can write beautifully about wine.

The Financial Times of London

There are very few people in the wine world who "get it" and Natalie is one of those who brings more fun to a buttoned-up and stodgy game.
