Established in 1867, Edge Hill was the first significant three-level, gravity-fed winery in Napa Valley, and by 1880, it was one of the four wineries responsible for over half of the Valley’s wine production. In 1999, this legacy inspired Edge Hill’s new steward, Leslie Rudd, to begin the historic restoration of the winery and estate, and return Edge Hill to the prominence it had enjoyed in the 19th century. The restoration of Registered Distillery No. 209 (built on the estate in 1882, and pictured here) is now finished, and we have turned our sights to the old stone winery, which should be completed sometime in 2006.

We are committed to making Edge Hill estate wines once again. In 2000, we planted five acres of vineyard on the St. Helena estate to a combination of Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Mourvèdre, Grenache, Carignane, and a few vines of Alicante Bouschet. The first wine from this vineyard—2003 Edge Hill St. Helena Mixed Blacks Field Blend—will be released in the fall of 2005.

In addition to the vineyard, Edge Hill’s olive and citrus orchards have been re-established, along with fields of herbs and flowers for the bees to forage. We are producing Edge Hill estate olive oil and honey (which has been the practice of the great agrarian estates of Napa Valley and around the world).

Unquenchable by Natalie MacLean

Natalie MacLean is a new force in the wine writing world ‐ a feisty North American answer to Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson. She can write beautifully about wine.

The Financial Times of London

There are very few people in the wine world who "get it" and Natalie is one of those who brings more fun to a buttoned-up and stodgy game.
