The Dascomb family purchased property in Santa Ynez Valley in 1974. Don Dascomb and his sons went to work planting the vineyard, primarily Cabernet Sauvignon, resulting in the birth of East Valley Vineyard. Over the years, the vineyard produced quality fruit which has been purchased by Babcock, Beckman, and Longoria.

In the late 1980s an unfavorable reputation developed regarding Cabernet Sauvignon wine produced out of the Central Coast—it was regarded as too “veggie.” By the year 2000, due to market trends, most vineyards made the decision to change to other varietals. Not the Dascomb family. Don and his son, Dave, knew the climate and soil were right for this variety. Dave realized the key to making a premium Cabernet is to allow the fruit to fully mature—reach peak ripeness. As a result, East Valley owns and operates one of the oldest Cabernet vineyards in Santa Barbara County.

Dave took an immediate interest in the family vineyard and wine making. Dave’s wine making began at an early age and he also participated in soil judging events throughout California and received many awards. In 1976 while still in high school, Dave took on the project of planting the Estate Chardonnay. Dave’s passion for winemaking and viticulture continued while earning his engineering degree from Cal-Poly, San Luis Obispo. By the late 1990s Dave’s continued passion and expertise for making premium wine, (and let’s not forget the encouragement and support from family and close friends) that prompted him to pursue producing wine on a commercial level. Dave began East Valley Vineyard and Winery with the goal to produce premium wine and always remain a boutique winery.

Dave began his search to secure sources for the additional fruit he required for his premium wines and decided upon Edna Valley, in San Luis Obispo for the Syrah. The Pinot Noir source is a direct result of those devoted friends. Dave was introduced to Fleet Hamilton who had planted a vineyard on his parents property located just south of the Santa Rita Hills. The vineyard was suffering from neglect and Fleet was ready to retire the project. They quickly developed a friendship and the common interest in making the most of this vineyard. Over the last few years, together with determination and nurturing, the two men (with the added help of those devoted family and friends), have the vineyard producing fruit distinctive of a premium Pinot Noir.

East Valley Vineyard and Winery has received many medals and awards for our wines. Most notably, at the 2003 California State Fair, competing against hundreds of other wineries throughout the state, our 2001 Syrah was awarded Best Syrah in the State of California.

East Valley Vineyard and Winery is well on our way to becoming Dave’s vision: That is, a boutique winery producing premium wines—never too large to share with you our history, story of the vineyard, vision, and passion about wine.
