Draper & Esquin started life as retailer-importer Esquin Imports in San Francisco in 1951. From the beginning, it was different from other stores in that the owner John Esquin made it a practice to go to France to seek out and visit tiny producers and négociants who hadn’t ever exported their wines to the US.

The company became Draper & Esquin in the 1970s and not only continued to import but began producing wine locally, following the same time-honored practice that its négociant suppliers in France had developed over the years. In its négociant business, Draper & Esquin bottled wine under two labels, Chestnut Hill and Draper & Esquin.

The original Draper & Esquin shop closed its doors in 1994. Rather than let its reputation die, a new company bought both the Draper & Esquin and Chestnut Hill trademarks and continued to produce Chestnut Hill for local stores and restaurants. The new company reintroduced top quality wines under the Draper & Esquin label in 1998. They were an instant success both in sales and in name recognition in the trade.

Draper & Esquin Wine & Spirits, LLC, the successor to that company, is now one of the few wine businesses in the US that enjoys Women’s Business Enterprise certification.

The Draper & Esquin name carries authority and tradition. The wines represent excellent value for the price, which the market recognized and continues to recognize. Our promise to you is to continue that tradition.

Natalie MacLean is a new force in the wine writing world ‐ a feisty North American answer to Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson. She can write beautifully about wine.

The Financial Times of London

There are very few people in the wine world who "get it" and Natalie is one of those who brings more fun to a buttoned-up and stodgy game.
