The old sheep ranch, at an elevation of 1800 feet above sea level, has rich, red volcanic soil known for producing superb wine grapes.

In 2006 the estate property was expanded to 247 acres with the purchase of an adjacent property. Vineyard plantings are now complete at 20 acres; varieties include Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petite Verdot, Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling. The balance of the land will remain as an ecological preserve.

When creating the vineyard great care was taken to preserve old groves of madrone, oak, and redwood trees, including the “Sonoma County Heritage Tree.” This 300-year-old madrone has a trunk diameter of eleven feet is thought to be the largest madrone tree in Sonoma County, and perhaps the entire state of California.

The integrated home and winery that Dan and his craftsman colleagues have created truly merge with the landscape. They offer a spectacular view of Lake Sonoma and have become both workplace and retreat for Dan, the Gustafson family and their friends. The family intends to keep the vineyard property feeling like a private home. This is a place they enjoy hosting visitors and wine lovers from all over the world.

Unquenchable by Natalie MacLean

Natalie MacLean is a new force in the wine writing world ‐ a feisty North American answer to Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson. She can write beautifully about wine.

The Financial Times of London

There are very few people in the wine world who "get it" and Natalie is one of those who brings more fun to a buttoned-up and stodgy game.
