A connection with the land and the Santa Ynez Valley drives the mission of Carhartt Vineyard. Mike and Brooke Carhartt produce estate-grown Merlot, Syrah, Sangiovese and Rosé. They are winegrowers who carefully craft artisanal wines from the ten-acre vineyard, which sits high on a mesa overlooking the family ranch and from the adjacent three acre Eleven Oaks Vineyard. At historic Rancho Santa Ynez, which has been in the Carhartt family for over half a century, the focus on creating an exceptional product from the family land continues today. Through sustainable farming and the consideration of biodynamic practices, the emphasis is on the quality of the fruit rather than the tonnage per acre. The Carhartt’s also offer small-lot wines made from vineyards located in Santa Barbara County and the Central Coast that are as carefully farmed as the Carhartt estate vineyards.

Carhartt Vineyard is truly a family operation. Mike Carhartt oversees the farming of the vineyards and manages the tasting room. Brooke Carhartt is one of a handful of women winemakers on the Central Coast. Their son Chase is in the AG-business/Viticulture program at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, and he works at the winery when he has time. Brooke’s brother, Pete, manages the wine club, the shipping and does the mechanical and electrical at the winery. Augustine Hernandez has worked alongside Mike and Brooke since 1993 as the ranch manager and assistant winemaker. The family’s devotion to excellence is reflected in the wines produced at Carhartt Vineyard.

Unquenchable by Natalie MacLean

Natalie MacLean is a new force in the wine writing world ‐ a feisty North American answer to Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson. She can write beautifully about wine.

The Financial Times of London

There are very few people in the wine world who "get it" and Natalie is one of those who brings more fun to a buttoned-up and stodgy game.
