As our family grew up in Northwest Portland during the 1970’s 1980’s and 1990’s we were very much witness to the cultural renaissance that occurred in our area during that time. Portland neighborhoods began supporting locally owned businesses that baked bread, roasted coffee, fermented beer and wine, cooked with local and fresh ingredients and exposed our friends, neighbors and the world to what Oregon’s bounty had to offer. Bergström Wines has maintained our mission of not only promoting Northwest locally owned and locally operated products but crafting great Oregon wines that pair well with the fresh and wild products being crafted and served in this great corner of the world.

With the hopes of starting a business that could become a legacy for their children and that respected John’s agricultural upbringing, John and Karen Bergström moved to Dundee from Portland and planted the Bergström Vineyard, a 15 acre southeast facing gentle slope overlooking the wide expanses of the Willamette Valley below.

In 1999, Josh Bergström, the fourth of five children, returned home to Dundee from a postgraduate program in Viticulture and Enology in the Burgundy region of France. With him he brought his fiancée Caroline who would become his wife as the two married in the Bergström Vineyard that fall. The Bergström Wine label was also born that fall as the young couple crushed 4 tons of high-quality purchased fruit at a neighboring winery.

Our family business has its roots in our father’s Swedish heritage and our love of the Pacific Northwest. John Bergström, father of five and founder of Bergström Winery, grew up in a small agricultural and logging village in Northern Sweden. He immigrated by himself to Oregon as a young teenager, eager to follow the American dream of creating a better life than the one he had known as a child. It is here in Oregon that he raised five children and created a very successful medical practice as a surgeon.

In 2001, the family business was joined by Kendall Bergström and her husband Paul de Lancellotti and the Bergström winery was constructed on their property on top of Calkins Lane. That year the de Lancellotti Estate Vineyard was planted and Bergström Wines was on it’s way to becoming the business that it is today; an intimate family operation run by passionate individuals striving to make Oregon’s greatest wines.

Today the Bergström Winery is owned by John and Karen Bergström, Josh and Caroline Bergström, Kendall and Paul de Lancellotti, Kim and Alan Brune, Eric Bergström and Anders and Liz Bergström. The winery has three estate vineyards covering 40 acres and two appellations in Oregon’s Northern Willamette Valley all of which are Demeter certified Biodynamically farmed. The winery produces 10,000 cases per year of ultra premium Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Riesling.

Natalie MacLean is a new force in the wine writing world ‐ a feisty North American answer to Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson. She can write beautifully about wine.

The Financial Times of London

There are very few people in the wine world who "get it" and Natalie is one of those who brings more fun to a buttoned-up and stodgy game.
