The partnership of Arger-Martucci Vineyards is more than a business venture between two owners; it is a love and appreciation of making great wine that is shared by two families. Owned and managed by the Arger’s and Martucci’s, the enterprise is a culmination of varied talents and expertise with one common goal: to produce premium wine.

In 1998, Dr. Kosta M. Arger and Richard L. Martucci, one Greek American, the other of Italian descent, made the decision over a glass of Cabernet to form Arger-Martucci Vineyards. Dr. Arger is a well-respected cardiologist with an intense passion for winemaking. Rich Martucci, the founder of a successful community bank chain, possesses an extensive background in both business and finance. Together their unique talents create an ideal partnership.

Dr. Arger’s initial interest in wine began in the early 1970’s while he was studying biochemistry during college. Learning about wine became a mental break between his more rigorous Pre-Med and English course studies. In 1975 while on their honeymoon in the Napa Valley, Kosta and Julie were luncheon guests of honor at the home of the legendary Joe Heitz and his devoted wife Alice. The following year, Kosta helped during the crush at Heitz Cellars and with the encouragement of Joe, trucked a load of grapes back to Seattle where he made his first barrel of wine with the 1976 vintage.

In 1997, Kosta made the decision to begin growing his own grapes. He and his wife, Julie fulfilled a life-long dream and purchased a 39-acre property atop Soda Canyon Road in the Atlas Peak District. Today they grow five varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Syrah and a tiny amount of Petite Verdot.

Rich and his wife Carol bought 33 acres of vineyard off Dealy Lane in Carneros about the same time as the Arger’s bought their property. Before their purchase of the Villa Helena Winery, located west of Highway 29 in St. Helena, they sold the Carneros property, but continued to purchase the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes. They also bought 240 acres on Soda Canyon Road, a mile from the Arger’s property, where three acres of Syrah are planted. Rich continues to oversee the financial side of the business while Kosta remains focused on his winemaking duties. Kosta and Rich, along with wives Julie and Carol, are dedicated to producing quality, handcrafted wine.

Arger-Martucci Vineyards Winery, located on Inglewood Avenue off Highway 29 in St. Helena, is one of the few family boutique wineries in the Napa Valley open to the public. Visitors are welcome from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, 7 days a week. A favorite destination and emerging secret, visitors enthusiastically comment, “This is what visiting wineries in Napa used to be like!”

Natalie MacLean is a new force in the wine writing world ‐ a feisty North American answer to Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson. She can write beautifully about wine.

The Financial Times of London

There are very few people in the wine world who "get it" and Natalie is one of those who brings more fun to a buttoned-up and stodgy game.
