The name Acequia comes from the old Spanish term for the irrigation canals that channel water from the Rio Grande River, to the fertile fields of the Corrales Valley in New Mexico. For decades the descendants of the old Spanish, French and Italian immigrants grew grapes and made wine here. That’s why after 10 years of growing grapes and making wine, owner and winemaker Al Knight, and his family decided, to open their winery in Corrales. Starting in Architecture School at UNM, then 32 years in the Adobe Construction business, in 2001 Al joined other wineries in Corrales and started growing wine grapes. Then in 2008, with help from UC Davis, and lots of friends and family, he got his license and opened the winery in May of 2010.

Acequia has now planted over 3000 vines in the Corrales area, where most of the grapes we use come from. In addition to that, by 2012 there will be 5 Wineries in the Corrales area within 10 minutes of one another. Not only does that make Corrales the Winery Capital of New Mexico, but it’s a great way to spend an afternoon with lunch or dinner at one of the fine restaurants in, or around, Corrales. And speaking of food, Al loves to cook, so look for monthly food and wine pairing recipes on this site.

Our tasting room is always warm and inviting for both public and private tastings. And, it has always been our policy to not only offer some of the best wines in New Mexico, but to educate our patrons in wine production and grape growing. We welcome all your Friends and Family, to stop by our winery, and the other fine wineries in the Corrales area. It’s easy to make the trip a memorable afternoon.

Natalie MacLean is a new force in the wine writing world ‐ a feisty North American answer to Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson. She can write beautifully about wine.

The Financial Times of London

There are very few people in the wine world who "get it" and Natalie is one of those who brings more fun to a buttoned-up and stodgy game.
