This robust and long-lived Italian red wine is made from 100% Brunello grapes also called Sangiovese Grosso grapes planted at high altitudes of 200-460 metres. The care and attention to this wine shows in the glass. Lots of complexity and depth of flavour with violets, earth and dried herbs. Pair with prime rib.

Reviews and Ratings

Courtney Flood rated this wine as 93/100 with the following review:

Plush and velvety Brunello with milk chocolate and ripe cherry, blackberry, fig and raspberry and a touch of rosemary. A great special occasion wine to share with friends and family over the holiday. I would pair this wine with a cheese plate to let the wine sit center stage. Pair with a rich wild mushroom and cashew pate, aged gryuere, and balsamic fig purée.
Monique Sosa - Accredited Sommelier rated this wine as 92/100 with the following review:

Holy comlpexity! This wine has got some incredible multi-personality characteristics. Aromas start out as smoke, earthy minerality, baking spice and (honestly) rubber! But give it a fews minutes and dried fruit (dates and figs) start to appear. The way it changes in the glass signals complexity. The palate shows similar notes to the aromas but added characteristics of vanilla and baking spices. It's is pretty delicous. Body is still full, the mouthfeel is luscious and don't squander this one. Pair with a special occasion, say within the next 6 months - wine is not getting any younger. (Tasted October, 2015)
Matt Steeves - Certified Sommelier rated this wine as 92/100 with the following review:

Ruffino's Greppone Mazzi Brunello di Montalcino, is a great example of a fine Brunello that after nearly a decade it's just starting to blossom into its drinking window. Deep ruby red, with notes of plums, cherries, blackcurrant, cedar and sweet tobacco. Full-bodied and full of life, this youthful and bold Brunello has great structure that will allow it to withstand and further benefit from another decade of ageing. For those that can't wait, decant for an hour and enjoy with roast leg of lamb with rosemary, Tuscan-style steak, Tuscan sausages and beans or pappardelle with wild boar (Cinghiale) or hare (Lepre). Drink 2015-2025. Tasted October 2015. 92 points. Matt Steeves - www.quercusvino.ca
Rachelle O'Connor rated this wine as 92/100 with the following review:

This Brunello is ruby red with beautiful garnet undertones. It is intense, no question, and very complex. There are notes of maraschino cherry, ripe plums and cassis. Once open in the glass, more aromas are released including chocolate, tobacco, spice and black pepper. The palate is full bodied, with exceptional tannins, smooth and elegant. The wine is well balanced, with a long lingering finish. The fine tannins will allow this wine to age very well. Pairs well with wild boar, or a rack of lamb - and for vegetarians a root vegetable ragout with shaved aged cheddar and Parmeggiano Reggiano.
Sean O'Regan - Certified Sommelier rated this wine as 92/100 with the following review:

Deep ruby, with berry, currant, spice, earth, and tobacco on the nose. Soft and velvety on the palate with cherry, plum, oak spice, tobacco and licorice/mineral notes on a long finish. Medium full bodied and very well balanced, still some grip with the tannins - no hurry on this one, should be good 5+ more years. Sadly, not available in the Ontario market.
Tasted Oct 2015 at Ruffino wine tasting dinner.
Cherie Cole rated this wine as 92/100 with the following review:

The year 2006 was considered a perfect vintage for Brunello and this one from Ruffino is the superb expression of a stellar vintage. Deep ruby in color with aromas of ripe cherry, plum and tobacco. Full-bodied with a long finish portrayed by juicy fruit, cinnamon and sweet tobacco. This wine was a very special privilege to taste as it is not available for purchase at the LCBO. Tasted Oct. 18, 2015 - Ruffino dinner.
Jon Steeves - Sommelier rated this wine as 92/100 with the following review:

The 2006 vintage of Brunello Di Montalcino DOCG is produced from 100% Sangiovese Grosso grapes (aka Brunello) from hills at an altitude of 200-460 meters above sea level with vast diurnal temperature differentiation. The grapes were hand-harvested in bunches at multiple times to ensure perfection in maturation of each cluster. After a delicate fermentation process with punching down of grapes and on-skin maceration, the wine was aged in oak casks for 36 months, then rested in stainless steel tanks for 6 months and bottle aged for an additional 12 months before release. Tasted at 14.5% ABV, ruby red in colour. This wine is rich, intense, complex with prominent typical notes of ripe plum, cherry, cassis, and violet and a hint of sweet tobacco leaf. This label was first produced by Ruffino in 1979. I enjoyed this wine with a basic pasta with pan fried wild mushrooms, prosciutto and parmesan dish and highly recommend trying it with Vegan grilled Portabello mushrooms, or braised meats such as lamb, beef, duck or roasted Turkey. Available by consignment.
Heather Wall - CS; WSET Advanced rated this wine as 92/100 with the following review:

100% Sangiovese crafted using 4 clones - one of which is 90 years old. The wine is a medium ruby-garnet colour with an abundance of dried fruit, earthiness, milk chocolate, leather and tobacco leaf. The acidity is medium(+) and supports the full-bodied complexity and layers beautifully. Tannins are evident but polishing. There's life left in this almost 10 year old wine! Enjoy this Brunello with finer cuts of beef or a rosemary encrusted rack of lamb. I suggest decanting if you are enjoying today. Otherwise, let it reward you in 5-10 years.
Tasted: October 2015
Craig Kuziemsky rated this wine as 91/100 with the following review:

A wonderfully complex wine with vegetal, berry and pepper aromas leading to a flavorful palate of black fruit, chocolate, raspberry and tobacco. Pair well with lamb or grilled meats. I hope this wine makes its way to the LCBO at some point.
