Reviews and Ratings
Andrew Bernardo rated this wine as 89/100 with the following review: Always consistent quality. Generously fruited, with blackberry, black plum skin, violet, spice, and a hint of cola. 89 points. (www.ottawawinejournal.com)
Mary Anne van Gaal rated this wine as 89/100 with the following review: Barbera is a very approachable variety, making it the third most planted red grape in Italy. This is a fruity wine with lots of juicy dark fruit, peppercorn, spice and cherry cola. Soft tannins lead to a round finish. This would be great paired with a roasted, herb crusted rack of lamb. Tasted October 29, 2017 at an Ottawa Fontanafredda wine tasting.
Andrea Shapiro rated this wine as 89/100 with the following review: Vibrant deep ruby colour this is a very easy and agreeable Barbera. Aged in new French oak barrels to make it more of a Barolo style. An evolving bouquet medley consisting of blackcurrant, plum, vanilla, leather, light tobacco and sea salt. The flavours brighten up deliciously with blackberry, cranberry, bay leaf, some herbal notes and minerals. Lower tannins and higher rich acidity make this very agreeable and easy. Will complement herb crusted veal chops and pasta dishes nicely. Tasted with Fontanafredda brand ambassador, Alberto Frea October 2017
Donna Hargrove rated this wine as 89/100 with the following review: Made Fromm 100% Barbera grapes, which are the most cultivated grape in the Piedmont region of north western Italy. A deep ruby red, this Barbera blends notes of blackberries with spice on the nose. The selling point to this wine was the combination of crisp sweetness on the tongue, followed by the long finish. Price point is just an added bonus! Tasted October 29, 2017
Lynn Van Der Linde rated this wine as 89/100 with the following review: A more fruit-forward expression of the Barbera grape, native to the Piedmont region of Italy. Aromas of black plums, blackberries and hints of forest floor, with flavours that carry through to a plum and cherry finish. Tasted October 2017.
Cherie Cole rated this wine as 88/100 with the following review: This very approachable Barbera comes from the North-East of Piedmonte where the warmer climate contributes to a New World style of wine. To further contribute to this style, aging in new French oak for shorter periods of time adds to the character. With a fruit-forward profile, you will find aromas and flavours of black cherry, dark plum, black pepper and violet. A perfect accompaniment with this wine would be charcuterie. Tasted with Alberto Frea, Brand Ambassador -Fontanafredda. October 29, 2017.
Melanie Lloyd - Certified Sommelier rated this wine as 88/100 with the following review: This is a dark, medium to full bodied Barbera that is loaded with juicy aromas of blackberries and plums, as well as sweet spice. Flavour wise, there are dark berries as well as a little black pepper kick. The tannins are present but very well integrated and nicely balanced by a fresh acidity. The flavours linger on the palate. This would pair nicely with barbecued ribs or with flavourful cheeses. Tasted October 2017
Louise Boutin -Certified Sommelier rated this wine as 88/100 with the following review: Charming black fruit aromas—black plum, blueberry and sweet blackberry topped with a hint of baking spices. On the palate, this crowd pleaser is juicy with delicious flavours of dark cherry, more blackberry and tangy raspberry wrapped in soft tannins. Enjoy this excellent value wine now with simple pasta dishes. Tasted on Oct 29th, 2017
Sean O'Regan - Certified Sommelier rated this wine as 88/100 with the following review: Deep ruby purple in the glass with a fruity nose showing light spice, black cherry, plum, and berry. On the palate, ripe sweet fruit of plum, cherry and blackberry showing freshness and little spicy. Mediumed bodied with gentle tannins and a medium finish. A very good value. Good match for pizza or charcuterie plates. Fontanafredda portfolio tasting - Oct, 2017
Lori Kilmartin WSET3 - WSET3 Sommelier rated this wine as 88/100 with the following review: This is a drink now, very approachable Barbera. The Barbera grape grows in abundance and is known for its deep colour, high acidity and low tannins. Fontanfredda's entry level Barbera shows this typicity. Plenty of fruit, some pepper notes and a touch of oak on the nose. Sour cherry flavours and a medium finish. Tasted October 29/2017
Gwen Barton rated this wine as 88/100 with the following review: An aromatic wine with dark cherry, plum and fresh tobacco. Although a very dry, there is the illusion of sweetness to this medium bodied wine due to the big fruit flavours including blackberry and dark cherry. Nice combination of fruit and spice- most notably white pepper and cinnamon. Light tannins and decent acidity makes for a very drinkable wine. Pair with thin crust pizza topped with wild mushrooms. Matt Steeves - Certified Sommelier rated this wine as 87/100 with the following review: Deep ruby red colour, the fruity nose shows sweet dark fruit, cherry, sweet tobacco, and graphite. Colin McKone - Sommelier rated this wine as 87/100 with the following review: Dark ruby with a purple hue and aromas of black cherry, blackberry, plum and black pepper with the flavours following through on the palate. It is well balanced with a short black fruit finish. This will pair nicely with tomato based Italian pasta. Tasted on October 29, 2017.
Kristin Perrin rated this wine as 86/100 with the following review: Nose: bright red cherry, slightly floral, liquorice (red) Palate: loaded with juicy red fruit, friendly acidity, medium bodied, easy to enjoy on its own before dinner while snacking on cheese and charcuterie, and continue on with dinners that include tomato based pasta sauces & white meats simply roasted.
Courtney Flood rated this wine as 85/100 with the following review: Very sweet nose with blueberry jam, cinnamon, nutmeg, cherry-cola, and licorice which contrasts the more mouth-watering and savoury taste of bright raspberry and tarragon and a good dose of cracked peppercorn. Pairing: a great food-pairing red, this wine would pair well with sweet earthy butternut squash risotto, anise-herbal flavor of tarragon chicken, or a sweet-tangy BBQ chicken.
