Grapes grown in the Chilean Maule Valley with thin, rocky and well drained soils - perfect conditions for Carmenere vines. Deep violet in colour. Med-full bodied with notes of blackberry, currant, bell pepper and sweet paprika. Nice complexity. Pair with roasted chicken in saffron sauce. Tasted: Nov 2018

An afternoon fave. Now they know how to vinify and make the wine has improved over the past 20 years, winemaker Matias Cruzat excitedly exclaimed to us during his tasting. This Carmenere was confidently showing thick, slow moving legs with an abundant bouquet of dark and light plums, cassis, vanilla, suede leather and delicate flowering herbs. Flavours reveal spicy, juicy blackcurrant, blackberry, fresh figs and dark chocolate. Medium plus acidity, medium body and finish with juicy, flavourful mineral touches. Juicy, mouthwatering and flavour filled! A fine pairing for rustic meats, herbed pork loin or lamb. 90 points - Tasted October 23

Ruby red, full bodied, dry. Mocha, black currant, savoury, paprika and saffron. Smooth tannins, balanced. Would pair with blackened cajun catfish. Tasted 2017 vintage in October 2018. 90 points #goodvalue
Pamela Chiles rated this wine as
90/100 with the following review:
Carmenere is typically a late-ripening grape (usually picked after Cabernet Sauvignon) and as it likes a warmer climate, tends to have lower acidity than Cab Sauv (amongst other traits). Winemaker for San Pedro, Matias Cruzat, handles his Carmenere deftly - it has rich, ripe black fruit and red berry overtones, a little tobacco leaf, sweet spice, dark chocolate and very little of the vegetal character that sometimes crops up with Carmenere. Lovely long finish and fine tannins. For food pairings, think game - elk, venison, wild turkey.

From Pencahue in the Maule Valley, which is the biggest valley in Chile, the 1865 Selected Vineyards 2017 100% Carmenere was harvested by hand at the Vinas San Pedro Vineyard, which is owned by 1865 Vineyards. This wine exposed aromas of ripe raspberry, cherry, green peppercorn, sweet smoke and oak. On the palate, ripe red cherry, raspberry, green bell pepper, wet gravel, chocolate and oak. Full body with a long finish, this wine shows lovely tannin and acidity. Pair with strong cheese or pasta. Enjoy. Tasted at Chateau Laurier winemakers from Vina San Pedro’s properties 1865 Single Vineyards October 2018.

A 100% Carmenere from Chile's Maule Valley, which has a perfect climate for this varietal. Deep violet/red, with intense aromas of red berries: raspberries, strawberries and cherries, as well as green pepper and spicy nutmeg. The full-bodied palate shows dark fruit, herbal aspects and spicy notes of dark chocolate, mocha and white pepper. Soft, smooth tannins with excellent structure and balance, and a lingering spicy finish. Terrific match for pheasant, partridge, grilled red meats, risotto and strong cheeses.
Tasted Oct. 2018 with the winemaker, Matias Cruzat.
Melanie Lloyd rated this wine as
91/100 with the following review:
A lovely and aromatic Carmenere from Pencahue in the Maule Valley. This Red has a complex nose with aromas of raspberry, red pepper, wet cedar, hints of tobacco, sweet spice, cocoa, and a touch of vanilla bean. We are more on the dark fruit spectrum on the palate with tart plum and blackcurrant flavours as well as black pepper and a lingering espresso finish. It is full-bodied with smooth tannins. Nice product!
Wine-Food Pairing: Grilled beef. Sharp cheeses.
Tasted October 2018 at the Vina San Pedro wine tasting event.
