Reviews and Ratings

Rebecca Meir-Liebman - Sommelier rated this wine as 93/100 with the following review:

Stephen Asseo, owner and winemaker of L'Aventure Winery, studied oenology in Burgundy and when he finished his studies, opened a winery in Bordeaux. In 1996 after making wines in Bordeaux for 15 years he decided to relocate to California. Chatting with his daughter, Chloe, she explained the adventurous winemaker’s somewhat radical move. “He was sick of the strict French wine regulations and desired to be more innovative in his winemaking; he made a bold decision to move with his three kids, with no English – to Paso Robles – where he can let his creativity flow.” Unlike other winemakers in California he decided to focus on making blends, not single variety wines, which is why he was known in local wine circles as “the crazy French winemaker”.

Tasting most of his portfolio, I enjoyed this blend the most. This wine is a Cote du Rhone blend, with 30% Grenache 30% Syrah and 40% Mourvedre. The grapes are harvested from the winery’s own vineyards, which have very low yields, hence the high quality of the wine. It is a bold wine with evident tannins; well-balanced with ripe fruit and good acidity. I found notes of cassis, fresh blackberries, wood, some white pepper and minerality on the palate. This wine will develop in complexity with some bottle ageing; it will cellar well for at least another 18 years. Pair it to great effect with red wine braised short ribs, osso bucco and grilled striploin with au jus.
Simon Chen rated this wine as 92/100 with the following review:

Tasted @ California Wine Tour in Toronto 2017 (Toronto only) - L'Aventure was definitely one of the best wineries from the tasting today. Every single wine is amazing. Cote a Cote is their CDP-style blend. It's rich, full flavor, and warmth coats the entire mouth. Medium + structure and medium finish.
